Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) led by chief designate Mutjinde Katjiua has described the decision by the Ovitoto chief, Vipuira Kapuuo, and the chief’s council to nominate three candidates to contest for the contentious Ovaherero chieftainship as a sham.<\/p>\n

The three are Popular Democratic Movement president McHenry Venaani, Rally of Democracy and Progress president Mike Kavekotora and academic Hoze Riruako.<\/p>\n

Their nomination has thrown the contested chieftainship, left vacant by the former paramount chief, Vekuii Rikoro, into more controversy.<\/p>\n

Katjiua as a designate believes he is the heir apparent, while other factions are keen to wrestle the throne from him.<\/p>\n

The council meeting was convened by Kapuuo in his capacity as chairman of the OTA and the acting paramount chief.<\/p>\n

The Ovitoto chief’s faction meeting took place on Thursday and Friday at Ozombuzovindimba in the Otjinene constituency of the Omaheke region. Ozombuzovindimba is the place where the German general Lothar von Trotha issued the extermination order against the Ovaherero on 2 October 1904.<\/p>\n

One of the OTA chiefs Rukambe Uazukuani says he and some other chiefs did not attend the \u201csham meeting\u201d called by the suspended, ‘renegade’ chief Kapuuo.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs chief Kavari of Kunene informed Kapuuo when the latter invited him to the meeting: The Hereros have a paramount chief in the person of Katjiua. There is no vacancy and the Kapuuo shenanigans are a mere tyd mors, which deserve no further comment,\u201d Uazukuani said.<\/p>\n

He, however, said all the chiefs of the different areas of the OTA were gathered at Otjozondema in Gam in remembrance of Von Trotha’s extermination order.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe chiefs and the overwhelming numbers of Hereros are in Gam to remember this day with the Herero community that returned from a long exile in Botswana caused by the genocide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The nomination of the three Kapuuo candidates brings to the fore the never-ending behind the scenes schemes and fights over the leadership of the Ovaherero people, since the demise of Rukoro a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n

It also threatens to ruffle feathers of the current chief designate Katjiua, who has ascended the throne courtesy of support from the other faction in the power matrix.<\/p>\n

The senate meeting where the paramount chief will be chosen from among the three candidates is scheduled for Otjimbingwe at the end of January 2023, according to Kapuuo’s spokesperson Uazuva Kaumbi.<\/p>\n
