About 40 000 hectares of grazing land on about three farms between Aroab and Gru\u0308nau in the \/\/Kharas region have been destroyed by fire since Wednesday this week.<\/p>\n

Keetmanshoop Rural constituency regional councillor Gerrit Witbooi says the fire started on Wednesday on the D201 road and appeared to be extinguished before it reignited on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now the fire has gone over the road at the crossing of Gru\u0308nau and Aroab, becoming unreachable for us,\u201d he said on Thursday. \u201cWe requested assistance from the Namibian Defence Force yesterday to provide us with air support as the fire has moved into a mountainous area, but until Thursday it has only been farmers and volunteers assisting with the extinguishing of the fire,\u201d said Witbooi.<\/p>\n

He added that the direction of the fire has changed, putting more grazing land at risk.<\/p>\n

Witbooi said one volunteer firefighter sustained minor fire burns on Thursday and was taken to a hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n

He said no animals have so far been observed as having been burned. \u201cOnly the grazing land has been affected by the fire and the infrastructure of the farms is still intact. I am so proud of the farmers and the volunteers for standing together to prevent damage to infrastructure,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n
