{"id":33210,"date":"2022-11-06T17:00:15","date_gmt":"2022-11-06T17:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/namwater-withdraws-n200-000-donation-at-event-hosted-by-pm"},"modified":"2022-11-06T17:04:49","modified_gmt":"2022-11-06T17:04:49","slug":"namwater-withdraws-n200-000-donation-at-event-hosted-by-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/namwater-withdraws-n200-000-donation-at-event-hosted-by-pm","title":{"rendered":"NamWater withdraws N$200 000 donation at event hosted by PM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE state-owned water utility, NamWater, has withdrawn an \u201cinappropriate\u201d pledge to donate N$200 000 to the Outapi Town Council last week at an event attended by prime minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of agriculture, water and land reform Calle Schlettwein on Tuesday in parliament said after NamWater received information on the pledge, it launched an investigation which led to the cancellation of the pledge.<\/p>\n<p>The minister was responding to Landless People&#8217;s Movement (LPM) parliamentarian Henny Seibeb asking why NamWater donated a large amount of money to a single local authority.<\/p>\n<p>Seibeb also wanted to know whether NamWater would extend the same gesture to other struggling village and town councils.<\/p>\n<p>The pledge was made on Saturday at the Outapi Town Council&#8217;s mayoral dinner and fundraising event.<\/p>\n<p>The event was officiated by Kuugongelwa-Amadhila. The Namibian on Monday reported that the Outapi Town Council raised N$506 200 at the dinner.<\/p>\n<p>The largest amount came from NamWater, which donated N$200 000.<\/p>\n<p>The town council itself pledged N$100 000, while Indian businessman Ali Dharani of Rani Group pledged N$30 000.<\/p>\n<p>Other pledges came from businessman Vaino Nghipondoka (N$10 000), O&#8217;B Davids Properties (N$25 000), FNB Outapi (N$10 000), and the National Housing Enterprise (N$10 000), while Outapi Town Council staff pledged N$11 500.<\/p>\n<p>Outapi chief executive officer Ananias Nashilongo, however, on Wednesday said he has been informed that NamWater&#8217;s donation was withdrawn because the utility believed the money would fund Kuu\u00adgongelwa-Amadhila&#8217;s campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, minister of international relations and cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, and minister of environment, forestry and tourism Pohamba Shifeta are contesting for Swapo&#8217;s vice president position.<\/p>\n<p>The candidates were at Outapi on Saturday to present themselves to delegates to the Swapo elective congress scheduled for later this month.<\/p>\n<p>The gala dinner took place after the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>A NamWater source on Wednesday told The Namibian the donation was withdrawn because it was not authorised by NamWater&#8217;s board, and that the water utility did not want to be associated with Swapo campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>The source said one of the reasons for the withdrawal is that NamWater&#8217;s chief executive officer (CEO) is not authorised to approve a payment of N$200 000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe board has asked him to explain the pledge,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n<p>NamWater CEO Abraham Nehemia wrote a letter to the board on 1 November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt must be pointed out that it is unfortunate that this exercise was linked to the gala dinner and therefore reported in the print media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpon becoming aware of this, a decision was taken to recall the commitment. Management sincerely regrets the mishap and apologises to the board,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Nehemia denied writing the letter.<\/p>\n<p>He said on Wednesday the donation was withdrawn, \u201cbecause we feel the way it was presented may create different stories\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nashilongo this week said: \u201cThey thought the money was collected to fund the campaign of the prime minister, which is not the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the town council thanked NamWater for the donation, and said it needed the money to develop the four informal settlements at the town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money we collected from the gala dinner &#8230; we will call the minister of urban and rural development to come and do a groundbreaking ceremony so that people see the money they donated was not for a campaign,\u201d Nashilongo said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the town council is disappointed with NamWater&#8217;s decision to withdraw the pledge without consulting the council on what the money would be used for first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s unfortunate that they withdrew the allocation based on incorrect information. They never contacted us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nashilongo said the cancellation letter came from Nehemia.<\/p>\n<p>The executive director in the prime minister&#8217;s office, I-Ben Nashandi, said the gala dinner and the pledge are not to be connected to the prime minister or her office.,<\/p>\n<p>Nashandi said the prime minister was only invited to deliver the event&#8217;s keynote address.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t even know why we need to comment on it.
