Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>NAMIBIA will chair the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) for November, focusing on a commitment to restore security in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation yesterday hosted the 1 119th meeting of the AU PSC.<\/p>\n

Minister of international relations and cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is now the chairperson of the PSC, said Namibia regards this responsibility as important.<\/p>\n

\u201c . . . mostly at a time when the continent is faced with multiple socio-economic and governance challenges, and is experiencing a surge in conflicts and the menace of terrorism and violent extremism,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Nandi-Ndaitwah said Namibia consciously put certain items on the council’s work programme for November.<\/p>\n

The AU at the council’s 1 062th meeting adopted a statement on the deployment of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM), according to which the council reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to Mozambique, SADC and Samim.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is to enhance coordination in support of efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism, and to restore security in Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The minister said the council also commends Mozambique’s commitment to addressing these threats.<\/p>\n

\u201cThus, I want to assure our sister country, Mozambique, that the support of this council remains towards that goal,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, the threat of terrorism has not only engulfed the Sahel, a region currently mostly affected by this menace, but also reared its ugly head across the continent,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

As a chairperson, Nandi-Ndaitwah said even the southern African region, which has the least burden of violent conflicts relative to other regions on the continent, is not immune to terrorism.<\/p>\n

Since the deployment of the SADC Mission in Mozambique, which is working along with Mozambique’s army , it has contributed significantly to facilitating the liberation of territories in the hands of terrorist groups.<\/p>\n

\u201cNamibia wishes to extend its appreciation to the member states that contributed troops and personnel to Samim, and for the cooperation extended to Samim by the government of Mozambique,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n
