{"id":33768,"date":"2022-11-14T16:04:19","date_gmt":"2022-11-14T16:04:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/charcoal-in-containers-threatens-exports"},"modified":"2022-11-14T16:21:16","modified_gmt":"2022-11-14T16:21:16","slug":"charcoal-in-containers-threatens-exports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/charcoal-in-containers-threatens-exports","title":{"rendered":"Charcoal in containers threatens exports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>NAMIBIA produces more than 200 000 tonnes of charcoal a year from invader bush, with more than 80% of this destined for different export markets.<\/p>\n<p>The charcoal is exported to South Africa, Japan and Pakistan, and there have been efforts to access the Turkish market.<\/p>\n<p>Namibian charcoal has also broken into the United States market together with beef and beer.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to the Namibia Agricultural Union, these exports are threatened by a ban by shipping companies because of the danger of charcoal catching fire in containers during transportation, mainly through spontaneous combustion.<\/p>\n<p>The NAU says in its latest newsletter: \u201cIn order to protect our charcoal industry from a charcoal ban, the Charcoal Association of Namibia (CAoN) held a strategic meeting with some of the shipping lines transporting containers filled with charcoal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the union, a number of issues were discussed at the meeting, including imposing a ban on loading charcoal into containers on farms where there are no proper packaging facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The association says there are many discrepancies around containers required to be packed according to standard operating procedures of shipping lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis poses a danger for containers burning on a ship,\u201d said CAoN, adding that charcoal producers underestimate the danger of not weathering charcoal properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeathering will be done by processors as producers do not weather charcoal properly,\u201d said CAoN.<\/p>\n<p>During the discussions, a new concept was introduced \u2013 stabilisation of charcoal.
