It was thus no surprise that I incorporated my passion for sports in my duties as Katutura constituency councillor.

Among many projects, I set up the Katutura Central Walk and Run Marathon, which was a huge success.

When the Commonwealth Games came up, and was scheduled to take place in Birmingham, United Kingdom, I saw it as a good opportunity to come up with a programme that would expose our constituency’s youth to an event of such caliber, while supporting our girls, Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi, as well as the entire Namibian team that qualified to participate in the games.

We engaged various stakeholders from the British high commission in Namibia and the Namibia National Olympic Committee. I was given the green light by the Namibia Olympic Committee to engage Kingdom Sports Group, which was an exclusive right holder selling event ticket packages to 22 Commonwealth countries, including Namibia.

We bought slots for 198 young people to watch the games, totalling N$5,3 million, and bought airline tickets through Satguru travelling agency and Trip Travel, totalling N$5,2 million.

The total cost was N$10,5 million.

We specifically engaged the British high commission, asking them to screen the group, and requested guidance on visas if indeed that was necessary, despite knowing that Namibians, as far as we know, do not require visas to go to the United Kingdom (UK).

It was really disheartening to find that the group was stopped from boarding at our airport, as well as others in Dubai, and the allegations were that we did not appear to be genuine sport supporters because we were from a poor neighbourhood.

JN: Where is the money coming from to reimburse those who have lost money in this venture?

VRK: We have refunded the group which bought airline tickets through Satguru. We paid Sargutu N$1,88 million, but they only refunded 74 travellers with N$876 000.

We paid Trip Travel N$3,2 million, and after much negotiation we are happy that at least N$2,9 million will be refunded, which is more than 90%, and a first for airline refunds.

We are yet to receive the refunds from Trip Travel, and we expect some this week.

As for the last group, in two weeks’ time. I specifically undertook a trip to Qatar Airways’ headquarters in Johannesburg last week, for which Trip Travel bought the tickets, to get an update on when the refunds will be made.

We remain hopeful and will refund the travellers as soon as the funds reflect in our accounts.

JN: Our understanding is that some of the money that was spent on tickets will not be refunded.

VRK: The amount that may not be refunded involves the funds paid towards accommodation and games. The terms and conditions state that the amounts paid are non-refundable if we fail to attend the games, unless they are cancelled, which was not the case.

Our rights remain reserved and we hope to recoup expenses incurred from either the British border force, or the British high commission in Namibia, who stopped the group from attending the games without any just cause.

JN: On what grounds did the airline refuse to allow the passengers to board the plane?

VRK: From the information received, the British high commission gave instructions for us to be prevented from boarding because we were allegedly not genuine visitors – coming from a poor neighbourhood or informal settlement.

JN: In an interview with Confidénte you’re quoted as saying your political rivals from outside and inside the party are instigating some of the supposed travellers’ to press charges. Where did this come from?

VRK: My hard work has been noticeable to the community, which has made me popular among the electorate.

This may have rubbed other politicians up the wrong way.

With elections coming up in 2024, fellow democrats are trying to position themselves for the congress and are attempting to eliminate others through smear campaigns and to be noticed.

JN: What harm has this venture caused your political career?

VRK: It is too early to tell, but I have received overwhelming support from my community because they know my brand and what I stand for. My conscience is clear.

Hordes of Namibians are said to have lost money in excess of about N$10 million.

In an exclusive interview with Jeremiah Ndjoze (JN), Katjaimo, who recently returned to his constituency office following his suspension, opens up about the botched trip.

JN: Please give us a brief background of the failed trip.

VRK: I have always been a sport fanatic.
