Even if Swapo is dysfunctional, the opposition needs to earn the right to tell them so. It will not be offered to them on a silver platter,\u201d political analyst Rui Tyitende says.<\/p>\n<p>Tyitende was speaking at a public dialogue on coalition governance on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He said opposition parties need to come together and find better alternatives that speak to the needs of the people, instead of constantly bickering.<\/p>\n<p>While political infighting is normal practice, Tyitende said, political parties should be cautious about allowing politics to make them lose track of their objective of serving the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is where opposition parties are failing. Of course they can make a case that they do not have the financial resources and that they are fighting against state machinery. But the onus is on them to be steadfast in mobilising resources,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing Tyitende&#8217;s sentiment, Charmaine Tjirare, who serves as member of parliament on a Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) ticket, said the opposition should stand together to unseat Swapo, but with a clear idea on what happens next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the sole mission is to drive out the ruling party, we are losing the plot. What happens after we drive them out? Do we have a plan in place, and what do we want to achieve?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tjirare said the ongoing boycotting of parliament sessions by opposition parties could be a first step towards forming a coalition among them.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, several opposition politicians said they are converging towards a coalition to \u201cdislodge\u201d Swapo in the next presidential election, slated for 2024, adding that a coalition government could be the future of Namibian politics.<\/p>\n<p>Tjirare said there is currently no discussion on forming a coalition, adding that the main challenge is power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in leadership don&#8217;t want to bow down to each other. We don&#8217;t want to stand as a collective and say this is for the masses. The quality of leadership we have and their individual agendas will deter us from effective coalitions,\u201d Tjirare said.<\/p>\n<p>Former Windhoek councillor Paulus Emmanuel said the reason why coalition governance systems struggle is due to clique formation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncillors and officials form cartels, and with this cartel they fight those who do not support their ideology,\u201d Emmanuel said.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking at the forum, Affirmative Repositioning activist Dimbulukeni Nauyoma said in order for a coalition government system to work effectively, opposition party leaders should withdraw themselves to the level of being technocrats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis would allow people who are vested in the implementation of service delivery and crafting tangible policies to be the ones who are spearheading (the coalition),\u201d Nauyoma said.<\/p>\n<p>Commentators say opposition parties must earn the right to bring Swapo to book over poor service delivery by having people-centred policies and ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are so obsessed with dislodging Swapo from power.
