{"id":34104,"date":"2022-11-19T07:22:10","date_gmt":"2022-11-19T07:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/ohangwena-has-highest-pupil-teacher-ratio"},"modified":"2022-11-19T07:49:15","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T07:49:15","slug":"ohangwena-has-highest-pupil-teacher-ratio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/ohangwena-has-highest-pupil-teacher-ratio","title":{"rendered":"Ohangwena has highest pupil-teacher ratio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>ABOUT 4 311 teachers in the Ohangwena region are providing education to 117 293 pupils, making the region the most crowded in terms of pupil-to-teacher ratio.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to the 15th School Day report released by the United Nations Children&#8217;s Fund (Unicef).<\/p>\n<p>The report says the region has a pupil-to-teacher ratio of 27\/1.<\/p>\n<p>The skewed pupil-to-teacher ratio comes at a time when most schools countrywide are in the process of enrolling pupils for 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The \/\/Kharas region stands at 24 686 pupils and 942 teachers, with a pupil-to-teacher ratio of 26\/1.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture deputy director Raimo Dengeinge ascribes the high pupil-teacher ratio experienced in most urban areas on continued rural-urban migration.<\/p>\n<p>He says the ministry builds classrooms, but years later pupils migrate to cities, causing a skewed pupil-to-teacher ratio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are flocking to urban areas,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>According to the 15th School Day report, the current pupil-to-teacher ratio is 26\/1.<\/p>\n<p>The report says the total number of teachers in the country is 31 421 while there are 839 579 pupils.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Khomas education director Paulus Nghikembua says they cannot reveal the status of school placements in the region, since pupils are still writing exams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must wait for the results to actually know if we have a challenge or not,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Walvis Bay education circuit inspector Joseph Martin on Wednesday said plans are still underway to accommodate all prospective Grade 1 and Grade 8 pupils for the 2023 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 440 Grade 1 pupils are still on waiting lists to be placed at schools at the coastal town.<\/p>\n<p>The Walvis Bay circuit office recently managed to reduce the number of Grade 8 pupils on waiting lists from 700 in July to 444.<\/p>\n<p>Martin urged parents to be patient, while the directorate is busy planning the way forward.<\/p>\n<p>He said it is the first time that so many Grade 8 pupils are awaiting placement.<\/p>\n<p>Many Namibians flock to the coastal town in search of employment, while others are transferred to the coast.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, schools become overcrowded.<\/p>\n<p>Parents have also been urged to understand if their children cannot be accommodated at the school of their choice.<\/p>\n<p>Martin advised parents to consider enrolling their children at schools at other towns in the region, with more space and hostel accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>Erongo education director Erenfriede Stephanus this week said a regional meeting next week will determine the final placement figures.<\/p>\n<p>The Zambezi regional education directorate has provisionally placed about 8 715 Grade 1 and Grade 8 pupils for the 2023 academic year, despite the overcrowding of schools in the region.<\/p>\n<p>This was revealed by the regional education director, Jost Kawana, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>He said enrolment continues to increase every academic year.<\/p>\n<p>About 4 289 Grade 1 and 4 217 Grade 8 pupils were placed in both rural and urban schools within the region, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has kept the available schools overcrowded, making the effectiveness of teaching and learning difficult.
