Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>MALAWI’s vice president, Saulos Chilima, was arrested last Friday on corruption charges in relation to an investigation into alleged bribery involving Zuneth Sattar, a United Kingdom (UK) citizen with links to Malawi.<\/p>\n

Chilima, who has previously been suspended from all delegated duties by president Lazarus Chakwera after he was named in a UK court and a report by Malawi’s law-enforcement agency as among senior officials under investigation, received a bribe from Sattar amounting to US$280 000 to influence the awarding of contracts to companies connected to Sattar.<\/p>\n

Chilima was taken to court on formal charges after earlier being interrogated by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the law-enforcement agency responsible for dealing with corruption-related crimes.<\/p>\n

In unprecedented collaboration, the UK’s National Prosecutions Agency (NCA) and Malawi’s ACB are investigating Sattar, dubbed Malawi’s ‘Gupta’ in some quarters in reference to the famous Indian-born South African business family which has been accused of grand corruption and state capture in South Africa.<\/p>\n

The agencies are specifically investigating corruption related to three multimillion-rand contracts for the supply of food rations, water cannons and other military equipment to the police and the defence force.<\/p>\n

The Malawian-born Sattar (41) has denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Chilima is the leader of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) party, a key member of the governing Tonse Alliance.<\/p>\n

Supporters of his party have thronged to the head office of the ACB and later the courts in a show of support.<\/p>\n

The political ramifications of the arrest were not immediately clear.<\/p>\n

Many suspect it dooms the end of the shaky Tonse Alliance, which took power in 2020, pledging a fight against corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have nothing to say, except that we will let the process continue,\u201d Chilima says.<\/p>\n

Addressing journalists and supporters after being granted bail, Chilima avoided making any comment on the court proceedings or his political future.<\/p>\n

Chilima, a former corporate executive who joined politics in 2014 as running mate to former president Peter Mutharika and who has served as vice president to both Mutharika and the incumbent Lazarus Chakwera of the governing Tonse administration, was charged in court with three counts of corrupt practices by a public officer contrary to Section 24 of Malawi’s Corrupt Practices Act.<\/p>\n

He was further charged with two counts of benefiting from or using influence in contracts, and one count of failing to report to the police that an advantage had been corruptly extended.<\/p>\n

Apart from the vice president, the president’s chief of staff, Prince Kampondamgaga, was also suspended from office following a report by the ACB.<\/p>\n

The police chief and a former head of the ACB itself have been arrested in connection with the investigation.<\/p>\n
