Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>PRESIDENT Hage Geingob has refuted allegations made that he is attempting to block or impede SWAPO Party Vice-President, Comrade Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, from becoming the Party\u2019s candidate for the 2024 Presidential elections.<\/p>\n

Geingob explained that these allegations are devoid of any truth and that he rejects them.<\/p>\n

Presidential Spokesperson, Dr. Alfredo Hengari explained that the President wholeheartedly congratulated on several occasions the victorious candidates for the three positions of Vice President, Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General, including new members of the Central Committee and Politburo elected at the just-ended SWAPO Party 7th Congress.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile it is natural for members of the Party to support different candidates vying for the contested SWAPO Party positions prior to an elective Congress, the President has always cautioned that one should always play the ball, not the person. Personal and grudge-laden attacks on and vilification of others are not part of the SWAPO Party DNA,\u201d Hengari said.<\/p>\n

The President therefore expects that once the elections at the Congress are over, winners and losers should all hold hands and move forward as united members behind the Party and the winning candidates.<\/p>\n

He stated that the President has openly and unambiguously committed to working with any of the candidates winning the contested positions of the Party at the 7th Congress. That position has not changed.\u201dTherefore, there is absolutely no truth in the suggestion that the President is allegedly unhappy about the re-election of Comrade Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as the Vice-President of the SWAPO Party. Comrade Nandi-Ndaitwah was duly elected for the second time as the SWAPO Party Vice-President.\u201dthe presidential spokesperson stressed.<\/p>\n

He further explained that in accordance with paragraph 53 of the SWAPO Party Rules and Procedures for Election of Party Office-Bearers and Party Representatives at Legislative and Government Levels, Comrade Nandi-Ndaitwah is the automatic candidate of the SWAPO Party for the Presidency of the Republic at the 2024 Parliamentary and Presidential elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cThus, any debates around this question is absurd and of no consequence,\u201d Dr. Hengari said.<\/p>\n

He further shared that in the past, in an attempt to avoid disunity that usually follows an elective Congress, SWAPO Party Presidents have in the past and in good faith, applied a practice of guided democracy, in terms of which they endorsed a particular candidate for the position of Vice-President.<\/p>\n

While this practice was well-meant and generally acceptable and applied in many other democracies, it somehow lost its relevance and usefulness when President Geingob, despite his candidature for the position of the Party Vice-President being endorsed by President Pohamba in 2012 and him being a sitting President during 2017, President Geingob was nevertheless challenged some members.<\/p>\n

In fact, because of the endorsement of his candidature, others tried to humiliate President Geingob in epic proportions Hengari added.<\/p>\n

He thus stressed that It is for that reason, upon reflection, that the President decided not to follow the endorsement practice during the 7th Congress of November 2022.<\/p>\n

Judging from the misguided reaction to and misinterpretation of such an idea and the potential for it to bring further uncertainty and malign speculation, Hengari said that President Geingob has since decided that he will fully serve his five-year constitutional term as the Party President until the 8th Congress. Comrade Nandi-Ndaitwah will therefore stand, with his full support and confidence, as the Party\u2019s Presidential candidate in 2024 whilst serving as the Vice-President of the Party \u2013 as was the case with President Geingob himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President thus calls on SWAPO Party members and supporters to rally behind the Party and its 2024 Presidential candidate, Comrade Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, so as to register and record a landslide victory at the 2024 elections. The President hereby directs that any factional groupings (if any exist) after the 7th Congress based on the support of a particular candidate during the just-ended Congress should forthwith be disbanded,\u201d Hengari concluded.<\/p>\n
