She, however, dropped behind the leaders with about 5km to go but managed to hold on for the bronze medal.

It was Johannes’ second Commonwealth Games medal after she won gold at the Gold Coast Games in Australia in 2018.

No 3 – Christine Mboma

Christine Mboma also won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham when she came third in the women’s 200m final on 6 August.

Elaine Thompson-Herah won gold in a new Commonwealth Games record of 22,02 seconds, while Favour Ofili of Nigeria won silver in 22,51 and Mboma bronze in 22,80.

It was a great comeback by Mboma who was out injured for most of the season and only started training a week before the Games. With that performance she once again underlined her status as one of the world’s top female sprinters and at the tender age of 19 a great future beckons.

No 4 – Ananias Shikongo

On 4 August, Ananias Shikongo won another bronze medal in the men’s 100m T11/T12 final in a new personal best time of 10,95, while Ndodomzi Ntutu of South Africa won gold in 10,83 seconds, and Zachary Shaw of England silver in 10,90.

What made his performance even more remarkable was the fact that he was the only T11 athlete running with a guide against partially blind T12 athletes who ran on their own.

It was the first time that Shikongo had gone below 11 seconds and at the age of 36 showed that there is still a lot left in him.

No 5 – Namibia beat Sri Lanka

Namibia made history when they beat Sri Lanka by 55 runs at the T20 Cricket World Cup on 6 October.

It was the first time that Namibia had beaten a test-playing nation at the T20 World Cup, while their emphatic victory was probably the biggest shock of a tournament full of upsets.

Namibia dominated all areas of the contest, scoring 163/7, before dismissing Sri Lanka for 108.

No 6 – Vera Looser

Vera Looser narrowly missed out on a medal at the Commonwealth Games when she came fourth in the women’s cycling road race over 107km on 7 August.

She remained with the leading pack throughout the race and in the final sprint to the line finished fourth, behind the gold medallist, Giorgia Baker of Australia, the silver medallist Neah Evans of Scotland and the bronze medallist Sarah Roy of Australia.

On 24 November, Looser also won the women’s title at the 2022 Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg after finishing ahead of South Africa’s Tiffany Keep and Kim Le Court of Mauritius.

No 7 – Namibian rugby team

Namibia’s national rugby team qualified for the Rugby World Cup for the seventh successive time when they beat Kenya 36-0 in the Africa Cup final on 10 July.

Flanker Wian Conradie was the man of the match scoring three tries, while captain Johan Deysel added a fourth, and Cliven Loubser 16 points with the boot.

Namibia will now meet the hosts France, New Zealand, Italy and Uruguay at the World Cup and will be targeting an elusive first win at the global spectacle against Uruguay on 27 September.

No 8 – Brave Warriors

The Brave Warriors side went on a winning streak at the Cosafa Cup to reach the final before an agonising 1-0 extra time defeat to Zambia.

Under Coach Collin Benjamin, the young side beat Madagascar 2-0 in the quarterfinals through goals by Absalom Iimbondi and Rudath Wendell on 12 July, and Mozambique 1-0 through a goal by Bethuel Muzeu three days later.

In the final they took Zambia to extra time before losing 1-0 to a late goal by Albert Kangwanda which gave the Chipolopolo a record-equalling sixth win at the Southern African showpiece.

No 9 – Martin Freyer

Martin Freyer conquered the toughest race on earth when he won the Munga MTB Race over 1 127km on 2 December.

Freyer completed the ultra marathon in a time of 56 hours 36 minutes, after starting in Bloemfontein two days earlier and traversing through the Great Karoo before finishing in Wellington in the Cape more than two days later.

It was an extraordinary ride through extreme weather conditions, ranging from 45 degrees and howling winds in the midday sun to chilly nights in the Tankwa Karoo, with Freyer barely sleeping two hours during the ultra-challenge that stretched over three days.

No 10 – Drikus Coetzee

Another Namibian cyclist Drikus Coetzee also had a great year as he won the Munga Grid Cradle in South Africa over 514km in a new record time of 21 hours 47 minutes on 1 October.

The former record holder, South Africa’s Hansie Joubert came second, finishing one hour 10 minutes behind Coetzee.

That win capped a great year for Coetzee during which he also won the Namibian Road Race title in February; the Munga Grid Tankwa over 361km in April; the mixed category of the 230km Trans-Baviaans MTB Race; the 267km Mabaruli-Solitaire MTB Challenge in September; and the 390km Nedbank Desert Dash in December.

For More News And Analysis About Namibia Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Namibia.
