Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>MINISTER of Education Anna Nghipondoka expressed her dismay after 420 Grade 11 learners failed to obtain a single mark in their mathematics second paper during the 2022 national examination.<\/p>\n

Nghipondoka said it is regrettable and totally unacceptable to that not much teaching has taken place at some schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvidence from marking of exam scripts revealed that 420 learners scored a zero in Mathematics paper 2,\u201d she said, adding that some learners failed even to calculate the percentage of a given amount.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is unacceptable and shows that teaching and learning is not taking place. I am very disappointed. This shows that teachers choose a certain chapter to teach and leave other chapters untouched,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She added that when examinations are stepped up they don\u2019t choose a certain chapter to focus on nor do they ask schools which chapters they have taught.<\/p>\n

She said that if learners are not properly taught they fail.<\/p>\n

According to her, the marking sessions provided the ministry with clear evidence that in some subjects some topics are not taught at all even though they are prescribed in the syllabus.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf that is happening in our schools, it must stop with immediate effect,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

This would also call for stronger, concrete accountability measures at all levels and structures.<\/p>\n

Nghipondoka noted that time on tasks, proper planning, delivery and assessment of lessons across the syllabuses must be prioritized.<\/p>\n
