Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Erongo police are urging the public to be alert at all times, and to report any suspicious callers who identify themselves as police officers and demand money to avoid arrest.<\/p>\n

Erongo police unit commander for community affairs Ileni Shapumba said a caller who identified himself as deputy commissioner Keelu from the National headquarters at Walvis Bay, is randomly calling people, including business people, saying that he is investigating cases involving them.<\/p>\n

“The person is claiming payments for outstanding warrants of arrest and traffic tickets. We distance ourselves from these individuals. The police will not call any person referring to an outstanding warrant of arrest and demand any payment by eWallet or any other forms of online transaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cLegitimately, the police or any other law enforcement institution would demand that a person be arrested or for the purpose of investigation, report at a respective police station,” he said.<\/p>\n

When the person fails to report to the police station, they are traced at their given locations, he said.<\/p>\n

Police officers are required to identify themselves through appointment certificates and act professionally at all times, and the police do not charge fees for investigating fraud cases, he said.<\/p>\n

The public is also urged to avoid sharing the last four digits on their bank cards with people who are allegedly calling from banks.<\/p>\n

Some scammers are also calling, asking for people to pay money for parcels that arrived for them at the airport.<\/p>\n

Most fraudulent activities were carried out in December at Swakopmund, while money was also withdrawn from Windhoek and Rundu.<\/p>\n
