Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>DISTANCE STUDENTS of the University of Namibia’s Faculty of Education and Human Sciences say their final examination results for last year have not been released yet.<\/p>\n

Some of the university’s results were released on 15 December 2022.<\/p>\n

First years majoring in accounting, business studies and economics say when they enquired about results at their faculty officer before the university closed, they were told to wait until it reopens.<\/p>\n

They are claiming they cannot progress to their second year if they do not get their results.<\/p>\n

A student who prefers to remain anonymous says she wrote her first educational foundation paper on 17 November, but has not received any results for this.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a loan holder and I have no debts with Unam. My results for educational foundation and English for academic purposes were not loaded. It’s January and summer school has commenced,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

She says she does not know whether she passed or failed, adding that she cannot register for her second year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am fearing that I may lose my NSFAF loan because of this. It’s almost registration time and we may miss out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will miss summer school because classes have already commenced. This is bad,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

The student says she was told marks have simply not been submitted to the faculty officer.<\/p>\n

Another student says her continuous assessment marks were uploaded on her student portal, but her exam results were never released.<\/p>\n

She says she visited her faculty officer before the university closed and was told to enquire via email, but has received no response.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe faculty officer told me to send her an email attaching my proof of examination script submission, which I did, but I got no response.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will miss out on summer school if I failed. We want this issue resolved immediately,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

This student too fears losing her student loan, since the subject is her major, but Unam’s student portal indicates she failed her first year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot register. We are a lot. I don’t know what will happen to us,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Contacted for comment, University of Namibia marketing officer Simon Namesho yesterday said he has not received any complaints, but he would ask the relevant departments about this tomorrow. \u201cCurrently the university is on holiday. There is no one, but I will ask the responsible people and give feedback,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Unam’s student representative council (SRC) vice president Pedro Muyo-Yeta yesterday said he has not received any complaints on the issue, however, he is aware of many students whose exam marks have not been released yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome reasons given are system errors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said students will only be assisted when the university opens on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will engage the university when it opens and try to find a solution, but if we do not get a satisfactory answer, measures will be taken,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Students’ Union of Namibia (SUN) president Benard Kavau says it is unfortunate that the affected students did not reach out to the union, however, it is not too late for the union to help them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are giving the university this week to deal with this matter. How do you have students who do not know their academic progress? What will they tell their parents? This compromises the students’ education,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

He says the situation has a psychological effect on the students and must not be tolerated.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember, these students have NSFAF loans. This poses a risk to their loans, and they end up funding themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NSFAF does not pay for failing students. Unam must be proactive and resolve the matter,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Kavau says the union will deal with the matter ‘robustly, unapologetically’ before registration commences this year.<\/p>\n
