Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Commissioner-General of the Namibian Correctional Services (NCS), Raphael Hamunyela has launched an integrated food production project at Nedersetting No. 607 \u2013 a portion of the Hardap Correctional Facility.<\/p>\n

The new project according to the Commissioner-General is part of many projects which have come into fruition from a memorandum of understanding (MoU) penned in January 2022 between the World Food Programme (WFP) and the NCS which aims to provide tangible results in the area food security using smart agriculture while capacitating NCS staff and offenders on food production.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch, Hamunyela said that this joint effort will support the scaling-up of domestic food production, the development of agricultural value chains and the improvement of socio-economic outcomes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have drawn lessons from the current global challenges of food security and affordability. One of these lessons is the importance of working together to enhance our capacity to locally produce adequate food for the nation. Therefore, I am proud to state that the cooperation between the United Nations World Food Programme and the Namibian Correctional Service has been a step in the right direction,\u201d Hamunyela said.<\/p>\n

He added that the success story is evidenced by the establishment of four Hydroponics Projects at four correctional facilities; Gobabis, Oluno, Walvis Bay and Windhoek Female Correctional Facilities. Second, the donation of 8 metric tons of wheat seeds which envisage for planting in the coming season at Divundu, Evaristus Shikongo and Hardap Correctional Facilities.<\/p>\n

Third, the installation of a 10 hectares centre pivot irrigation system at the Hardap Correctional Facility, equipped with 42 solar panels.<\/p>\n

Hamunyela said that due to the good working relationship with the WFP, the NCS was invited to and attended the South-to-South learning exchange in Zimbabwe, in December 2022. He explained that exchange was aimed at sharing experiences and ideas on the effective implementation of sustainable integrated food systems that are transformative and promote rural economic growth.<\/p>\n

In addition to the above, Hamunyela said the cooperation has other envisaged projects such as the establishment of the Kaoko-Otavi Correctional Facility.<\/p>\n

This, he said, is an agricultural irrigation project in the Kunene Region, covering 250 hectors which is aimed at contributing to food security of the country.<\/p>\n

This project is expected to produce crops such as maize, wheat, vegetables and animal feed. This produce will address the current challenge of insufficient food for both human and animals brought about by the persistent drought in the region. It will also complement the School Feeding Programme in Namibia.<\/p>\n

Other planned activities are value addition to NCS produce, poultry establishment and seed production.<\/p>\n

Hamunyela concluded that although food production is not a key mandate of the NCS, it has identified the need to impart agricultural skills for inmate rehabilitation and reintegration as well as to attain food self-sufficiency, to which the NCS is performing satisfactorily.<\/p>\n
