Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>MOBILE Telecommunications Company Ltd, (MTC) has initiated a training programme for unemployed youths under its N$2,6 million MTC 4Life programme launched last year.<\/p>\n

According to a statement issued by MTC public relations officer Erasmus Nekundi, this week, the programme will offer training in 10 trades, and 50 unemployed youths from all 14 regions of the country have been selected to be the first intake that will be receiving business and financial training.<\/p>\n

They will receive start-up toolkits to enable them to start their own micro businesses immediately after training.<\/p>\n

\u201cThus far, the programme is well on track. The vetting and shortlisting process was completed and all prospective candidates were informed in mid-December on the outcomes of their interviews. The training for the successful candidates will commence early next month, as planned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Nekundi said some of the trades in which training will be offered are photography, graphic design, barbering, hairdressing, nail, make-up, catering, baking, sewing, and brick manufacturing.<\/p>\n

For each trade, MTC has partnered with a reputable and previously disadvantaged SME Namibian company to provide the trainees with the appropriate practical training, whose duration will be between three and 10 days depending on the trade.<\/p>\n

MTC 4Life is a socio-economic undertaking to tackle poverty by mitigating youth unemployment through empowering Namibians to become self-employed within the SME sector.<\/p>\n

The project aims to provide a training and upscaling programme for young people between the ages of 21 and 35, to gain practical and entrepreneurial skills with life changing opportunities to earn a livelihood.<\/p>\n

Nekundi said after the call for applications last year for the programme, an overwhelming 8 000 applications were received from unemployed Namibian youth applicants from across the country who were interested in joining the programme.<\/p>\n

At the launch of the programme last year, MTC said in order to fully equip the trainees in their respective trades, an entrepreneurial course will also be offered to complement the practical training.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition to practical training, the candidates will also undergo a full entrepreneurship training course through the project’s partner, Twapewa Kadhikwa Entrepreneurship Academy,\u201d said MTC chief marketing officer Tim Ekandjo at the launch last year.<\/p>\n
