Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Namibian embassy in Germany has not received any information on Namibian victims of the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday.<\/p>\n

This was confirmed by Namibia’s ambassador to Germany Martin Andjaba.<\/p>\n

The two countries were hit by earthquakes on Monday at 04h15 and 13h30 local time.<\/p>\n

The earthquakes of 7.8 and 7.7 magnitude are described as the strongest in the region in more than 100 years.<\/p>\n

Over 17 000 people were reported injured by midday Tuesday, with an estimated 5 000 dead, and the numbers are expected to rise as many are believed to be buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings.<\/p>\n

Opposition leader McHenry Venaani has sent a message of condolence to Feral C\u0327ekerek Oruc\u0327kaptan, the Turkish ambassador to Namibia.<\/p>\n

“Our thoughts go out to the communities struck by this disastrous tragedy and all involved in the search and rescue efforts. Moreover, my deepest condolences go out to the bereaved families,” said Venaani.<\/p>\n

Venaani said he is pleased with the solidarity displayed by European and African countries coming to the aid of Turkey.<\/p>\n
