Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>A TOTAL of 50 candidates started their two-week training under the N$2,6-million MTC 4-Life project in Windhoek and at Ongwediva this week.<\/p>\n

According to a press release, the project is a socio-economic undertaking to tackle poverty by mitigating unemployment through empowering young Namibians to become self-employed within the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector.<\/p>\n

The project aims to achieve this objective by providing training and upscaling programmes for young people between the ages of 21 and 35 years to gain practical and entrepreneurial skills with life-changing opportunities to earn a livelihood through photography, graphic designing, barbering, make-up and nail technology, hairdressing, catering, sewing, baking and manufacturing.<\/p>\n

MTC has selected five trainees from each of the 10 trades.<\/p>\n

Giving an update on the programme, MTC spokesperson Erasmus Nekundi said: \u201cAfter successfully conducting interviews with 200 applicants who were shortlisted, we are pleased to announce that a total of 50 successful candidates were selected, and today we commenced the training as planned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to have candidate representatives from all regions, while also including people with disabilities. MTC will pay for their training cost, and after completing the training, each trainee will receive a start-up toolkit to start a business, as well as N$5 000 in capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is to empower them to start their own microbusinesses, become self-employed, and earn a living on their own,\u201d Nekundi says.<\/p>\n

In addition to the training, participants will undergo entrepreneurial training to equip them with the skills to run a business.<\/p>\n

Once they have their businesses running, field experts will monitor growth and facilitate expansion, and further provide business guidance.<\/p>\n

Tresia Ngjuulongo from Eenhana is the only woman trainee in the barbering\/hairstylist trade.<\/p>\n

She thanked MTC for the initiative, while urging fellow trainees to utilise the opportunity to empower themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a life-changing opportunity for me, and I would like to thank MTC for it. Even though the field of barbering is dominated by men, I believe women are equally capable to grow and thrive in the sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we have started with training. I am enjoying the learning and cannot wait to finish and go set up my own barbershop,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
