Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Richelieu Namibian Eagles lost the opening match of their Nepal tour when they went down by two wickets to Nepal at Kirtipur yesterday.<\/p>\n

After being sent in to bat, Namibia posted 285 all out, with Michael van Lingen scoring 133 and Gerhard Erasmus 56. It was, however, not enough as Nepal reached 287\/7, with opener Kushal Bhurtel scoring 115, and Rohit Paudel 72.<\/p>\n

In Namibia’s innings, both openers Lohan Louwrens (5) and Karl Birkenstock (13) were removed cheaply, but Van Lingen and Erasmus revived Namibia’s innings with a great 124-run partnership.<\/p>\n

It was slow going at first with boundaries hard to come by, but they persevered and Van Lingen brought up his 50 off 69 balls with the total at 90\/2 halfway through their innings.<\/p>\n

They then stepped up the tempo with Erasmus hitting sixes off Lalit Rajbanshi, Sandeep Lamichhane and Kushal Malla, before reaching his 50 off 72 balls.<\/p>\n

He was dismissed by Malla shortly after for 56 off 79 balls, but Van Lingen went on to reach his century off 118 balls, before he was eventually dismissed for 133 off 137 balls, which included nine fours and five sixes.<\/p>\n

Further down the order, Zane Green added a rapid 34 off 19 balls (4×4, 1×6), before the whole side was dismissed for 285 off their 50 overs.<\/p>\n

Karan KC was Nepal’s best bowler, taking 5\/61 off 10 overs, while Lamichhane took 3\/66.<\/p>\n

In Nepal’s innings, Bernard Scholtz made an early breakthrough, bowling Aasif Sheikh for a duck, but Nepal’s batsmen, led by opener Khushal Bhurtel soon regained the initiative.<\/p>\n

Bhurtel and Gyanendra Malla put on 50 for the second wicket, before the latter was dismissed by Nicol Lofti-Eaton for 25, while Rohit Paudel and Bhurtel added 133 runs for the third wicket, before Paudel was caught and bowled by Ruben Trumpelmann for 72.<\/p>\n

Trumpelmann revived Namibia’s hopes when he also dismissed Kushal Malla for 6 and Dipendra Sigh Airee for 7, but Sundeep Jora joined Bhurtel in a 49-run partnership as the momentum swung back to Nepal.<\/p>\n

Jora was dismissed by Tangeni Lungameni for 28, but Bhurtel went on to reach his century before being dismissed for 115 off 113 balls (10×4, 4×6), while Karan KC added 20 not out as they reached the winning target for the loss of eight wickets and with 14 balls to spare.<\/p>\n

For Namibia, Trumpelmann took 3\/48 off 10 overs and Loftie-Eaton 3\/54 off 5,4 overs.<\/p>\n

Namibian captain Gerhard Erasmus said it was a great game.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an awesome spectacle out there and we had a nice crowd out so it was a great advertisement for cricket. A lot of credit must go to the Nepal team, the way they played today was outstanding,\u201d he said, adding that the toss played an important role.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t want to blame the defeat on the toss, but I think it was a good toss to win, it was slightly soft in the morning, it skids and turns then, and later on it flattens out. We’ve seen from past experience that’s what the Nepal boys also try and do with the toss. So we don’t have any excuses and I think we actually batted quite nicely to set up a foundation, when it was quite tough and then to launch it at the end to get to 280. We probably needed another bowler today to step up – two of our guys bowled out of their skins, to get us close, but we probably just needed a bit more backup. And then obviously in the field if we had taken some catches, I think we could have probably defended that total,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Namibia are already missing top all-rounder JJ Smit through injury, while Jan Frylinck has recovered from injury, although he still cannot bowl and Erasmus said that their absence left a gap.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’ll go back to the drawing board now and see what the side should look like for tomorrow. Obviously Jan is a big player for us so we are missing him and JJ, with two all-rounders it really leaves quite a dent and to replace them has not been easy, but we have been working on building our depth and its great exposure for the guys coming in, to build for the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Namibia now take on Scotland at the same venue today.<\/p>\n
