Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>NAMIBIA’s women’s cycling team all but secured a spot at the 2024 Olympics after a rich haul of points at the African Cycling Championships in Accra, Ghana last week.<\/p>\n

The Namibian team of Vera Looser, Courtney Liebenberg, Melissa Hinz and Anri Krugel already won a silver medal in the team time trial last Wednesday, while three places amongst the top eight in Sunday’s road race saw them completing an impressive points haul.<\/p>\n

According to team coach Hans du Toit that has virtually sealed them a spot at next year’s Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe gained enough points to move Namibia into the top 40 countries of the world for the first time ever. This is currently an Olympic qualification spot, but we have to make sure we stay there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

With the world’s top 45 ranked countries qualifying for the Olympics, Namibia is now very well placed, but positions may still change before the cut-off date.<\/p>\n

Du Toit said their team tactics worked out to perfection.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the road race it was pure team tactics – we put one rider in the breakaway group of six riders and Courtney just missed out on a bronze medal when she finished fifth in a photo-finish for third place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The 72km road race was won by Ese Ukpeseraye of Nigeria who beat four other riders in a sprint to the line, with all finishing in a time of two hours 36 seconds.<\/p>\n

Bamogo Awa of Burundi came second, Lucie de Marigny-Lagesse of Mauritius third, Diane Ingabire of Rwanda fourth, and Namibia’s Liebenberg fifth.<\/p>\n

Krugel finished seventh, six seconds behind, while Looser finished eighth, leading in the group of favourites nearly six minutes behind in 2:06:12.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bunch with probably all the favourites finished about six minutes behind. Our tactics worked to perfection as we were first and second in the bunch, and with Melissa who came 14th overall, they had the job of stretching the bunch out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe scored in the region of 340 points in total at the championships – it was a great team effort from the girls,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

In the 36km team time trial last Wednesday, Mauritius won gold in a time of 52 minutes 16 seconds, with Namibia winning silver in 53:37 and Rwanda bronze in 54:01.<\/p>\n

The 24km individual time trial the next day was won by Aurelie Halbwachs of Mauritius in 35:09, followed by Valentine Nzayisenga of Rwanda in 35:45 and Kimberley Le Court of Mauritius in 35:48.<\/p>\n

Of Namibia’s cyclists, Krugel came seventh in 37:11 and Hinz eighth in 37:15.<\/p>\n

Du Toit said it was an impressive performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the largest female field to have entered the African Championships, with more than 50 riders representing seven countries, and to have three in the top eight was a great achievement,\u201d Du Toit said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’d like to thank the Namibia Olympic Committee and Windhoek Pedal Power club for making it financially possible for us to compete here on our drive towards Olympic qualification,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
