Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE authorities in the Ohangwena region are concerned over the safety of flood victims who have been relocated to safety centres, as many are allegedly abusing alcohol.<\/p>\n

The region’s disaster risk management committee wants police officers to be deployed at the centres for victims’ safety.<\/p>\n

Ohangwena Regional Council spokesperson Silas Nepembe says the relocated flood victims are faced with a number of challenges, and many are in dire need of pyschosocial support.<\/p>\n

He says many have started abusing alcohol and other substances.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a need for light installation at the centres. The safety of the relocated people is now compromised, hence the need for police officers to curb violence,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Nepembe says the flood victims at the relocation centres are also in dire need of firewood for cooking and clean drinking water.<\/p>\n

He says two Onghala village residents were recently diagnosed with cholera.<\/p>\n

They have, however, been treated and have been discharged from hospital.<\/p>\n

The region is battling a shortage of nursing staff and linen at its hospitals, he says.<\/p>\n

The region also needs strong vehicles, Nepembe says.<\/p>\n

GOVT APPROVES N$72 MILLION FOR FLOOD RELIEF<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Cabinet on Tuesday approved an amount of N$72 million to fund a flood-relief programme through the Office of the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

This was announced by government spokesperson Peya Mushelenga in a media statement on Cabinet decisions on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Mushelenga said the funding is for the provision of relief in the form of water, tents, food, mosquito nets, hygiene items, life jackets, blankets, mattresses and psychological support to the flood-affected communities.<\/p>\n

He said the Cabinet has mandated the national disaster risk management committee to ensure the optimal and effective coordination of emergency and relief responses.<\/p>\n

Mushelenga said the Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture to propose workable interventions to deal with the resumption of teaching and learning in affected areas. The government has also approved the provision of food assistance to the affected communities for 16 months or until the next harvest, the statement said.<\/p>\n

Mushelenga said the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform was asked to urgently supply drinking water, boats and sanitation facilities to these communities.<\/p>\n

He said the agriculture ministry will also scale up the construction and rehabilitation of earth dams in the flood-prone areas to harvest floodwater.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ministry is also directed . . . to educate communities, including traditional authorities, to halt the settlement of communities in flood-prone areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

SUBSIDING<\/p>\n

Leonard Hango, the senior hydrologist in the ministry said on Tuesday the flood waters that arrived from Angola were subsiding.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, floodwaters are still flowing at the Okatyali, Uukwiyu Gwuushona and Ompundja constituencies in the Oshana region.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says areas such as Oshakati East and parts of Ongwediva are still flooded.<\/p>\n
