Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>SINGLE mothers at the coast have a unique platform at a flea market to help them bounce back from the harsh economic conditions prevalent throughout the country due to especially Covid lockdowns.<\/b><\/p>\n

Many women were left jobless over the last year, in particular single mothers who are the sole breadwinners and are finding it increasingly difficult to put food on the table. With this in mind, Olivia Christians from Swakopmund came up with an income generating idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea is to give single mothers and mothers in general who are struggling financially a platform to sell goods at a flea market, to generate finances for themselves,\u201d says Christians who aims to keep the entry fee affordable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope for 20 stalls with a one metre distance between them. They can decorate their stalls, but no alcohol may be sold,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

The response from the public has been positive so far, indicating that many single mothers are keen to embrace the platform to help provide for their children.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the idea of a single mothers event, which will encourage and motivate moms to be and do their best, to have a day to relax, while making some money,\u201d says Fayette Kahmann, who is interested in securing a stall. \u201cIt is a great idea to bond with our fellow mothers on a platform where they can display their talents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is indeed an awesome initiative to empower ladies and will give them a sense of ownership, to be able to do something for themselves and feel worthy,\u201d says another interested exhibitor, Esparanza Diergaardt. \u201cSuch women need to be aware that they do not always have to rely on men for support. We are our own source of strength, dignity and pride.\u201d The flea market will take place on 26 and 27 November in the Woermann Brock parking area at Swakopmund.<\/p>\n
