Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>IN a first for the African continent, the World Salt Conference is set to take place in Namibia in November.<\/p>\n

The conference, which sees delegates from around the world gather to discuss the latest market trends and developments in the salt industry, has previously been held in various countries, including the United States and Germany.<\/p>\n

Walvis Bay Salt Holdings managing director Andre Snyman, says Namibia was proposed as the next host country during last year’s conference in Hamburg, Germany.<\/p>\n

\u201cNamibia annually produces in excess of 1,3 million tonnes of salt and a salt conference has never been hosted on the African continent \u2013 hence the proposal,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

After a successful visit to Namibia in January by the conference organisers, the event is set to take place at the Swakopmund Strand Hotel from 6 to 9 November.<\/p>\n

Approximately 100 to 150 delegates from around the world, including representatives of salt mines, salt producers, logistics and shipping companies, engineering companies, and equipment suppliers are expected to attend.<\/p>\n

Walvis Bay Salt Holdings, the largest producer of solar sea salt in sub-Saharan Africa, will act as the event’s main sponsor.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that this exposure will be good for Namibia, not only in terms of the possibility of new export markets, but also for our tourism industry in general,\u201d Snyman says.<\/p>\n

The salt industry is a significant contributor to the Namibian economy.<\/p>\n

Worldwide, around 335 million tonnes of salt are produced each year, with over 50 million tonnes exported by more than 50 countries.<\/p>\n
