Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Mpungu Constituency will host the third Kavango West Governor’s Cup this week.<\/p>\n

All eight constituencies from the region will be in action when the cup kicks off on Thursday, concluding on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The competition is the brainchild of the Kavango West regional governor, Sirkka Ausiku, in collaboration with the Kavango West Regional Football Committee.<\/p>\n

The 2023 edition will be the tournament’s third showing after it was called off in 2019 due to a lack of sponsors, followed by a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19.<\/p>\n

The cup aims to give athletes under the age of 17 to 20 the opportunity to showcase their skills for selection to the regional teams, to represent Kavango West at various sporting competitions, such as The Namibian Newspaper Cup, powered by Standard Bank, which takes place at Otjiwarongo next month.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn top of the Regional Governor’s Cup, the regional committees of the various sports codes are also expected to spearhead the preparation of regional teams that are to partake at national competitions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The tournament’s coordinator and Kavango West Football committee member, Egidius Nambara, recently told The Namibian the competition is held annually during the school holidays to allow all potential players to participate.<\/p>\n

He said all eight participating constituencies had indicated their readiness to fight for honours.<\/p>\n

The constituencies were expected to constitute soccer and netball selection committees to oversee the selection and preparation of their teams for the region’s flagship youth competition.<\/p>\n

Although preparations are at an advanced stage, \u201cthere’s a need for support from the business community in sponsoring a few items\u201d, Nambara said. The sponsorship would be able to cater for equipment to be used at the tournament, such as tents, public address systems, balls, nets, whistles, trophies, as well as to cover awards for individual prizes.<\/p>\n

The first edition of the cup was held in 2017 at Nkurenkuru, with football as the sole sporting activity, which the Mankupi constituency won.<\/p>\n

Netball was introduced to the tournament in 2018, with the Tondoro constituency taking honours, while the Kapako constituency won the soccer category.<\/p>\n
