Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>SPORT continues to bring together people from all walks of life and that was the reason behind Oshakati Town Council\u2019s Mayoral Cup which is being hosted for the second time this year.<\/p>\n

Teams from all corners of the country are expected to participate in the tournament scheduled to take place at the town\u2019s Independence Stadium from 4 to 7 May.<\/p>\n

Oshakati Mayor Leonard Hango said that the idea is to revive sports, particularly those sports codes that have been dormant for some time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough sport, we are giving back to the community. We do not just think about issuing municipal bills. We also want citizens to reap the benefits,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He noted that an amount of N$80 000 was set aside for the competition.<\/p>\n

He said that introducing and promoting sports has entertainment value but also has the potential of reducing crime and other social evils.<\/p>\n

A number of teams of various sports codes have already registered and the registration process is still ongoing.<\/p>\n

A grand prize of N$20 000, a trophy, and gold medals are up for grabs in the young soccer division.<\/p>\n

The second-place finisher will receive N$12 000 in addition to silver medals, while the two losing semifinalists will each receive N$4 000.<\/p>\n

The champion in the legend soccer category will get N$8 000, a trophy, and gold medals.<\/p>\n

Silver medals and N$5 000 will be awarded to the second-place finisher. Semifinalists will receive N$3 000 each.<\/p>\n

In contrast, the winners in netball and volleyball will each receive N$4 000, a trophy and gold medals, while the runners-up will receive N$3 000 and silver medals, and the semi-finalists will receive N$1 500 each.<\/p>\n
