Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>IN an effort to curb Transnational Organised Crime (TOC) and to reduce the chances of Namibia getting grey listed by the Financial Action Task Force, the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in conjunction with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) signed an agreement.<\/p>\n Inspector General of the Namibian Police Force, Lieutenant General Joseph Shimweelao Shikongo, explained that the International Criminal Police Organization\u2019s (INTERPOL) National Central Bureau (NCB) Division of the Namibian Police Force is connected to the I-24\/7 system (INTERPOL Secured Global Communication Systems). This is a technical network that links law enforcement in all 195 member countries, and enables authorized users to share sensitive and urgent police information with their counterparts around the globe.<\/p>\n He added that the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Namibian Police Force, the ACC and FIC is an expansion of the I-24\/7 System.<\/p>\n General Shikongo explained that the ACC and FIC will serve as national centres for the receipt and analysis of suspicious transaction reports and other information relevant to money laundering, terrorism financing and associated predicate offences.<\/p>\n \u201cTherefore, if these two entities are allowed to have access to INTERPOL databases, it will enhance the ability to focus their activities to target wanted persons and bank accounts linked to suspects. This is a clear indication that the stakeholders are keen to support the Namibian Police Force in realising its core mandate,\u201d Shikongo explained.<\/p>\n He further added that the signing of the MoA came at the right time as one of the INTERPOL Executive Delegates for Africa is from Namibia, and this cements the leading role Namibia plays towards the expansion of the I-24\/7 system, beyond the NCBs in the SADC region and Africa as a whole.<\/p>\n Shikongo said that to combat crimes in a more robust and dynamic manner, the INTERPOL Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Centre will support member countries in the area of financial crimes, money laundering, asset recovery and any forms of corruption.<\/p>\n He, however, highlighted that the MoA is not a chance for NamPol to delegate its powers or mandate to the two organisations.<\/p>\n \u201cNamPol will handle all cases emanating from and through the implementation of this MoA, such as the investigations and arrests.
