Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Government of the Republic of Namibia joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Girls in ICT Day, a day set aside to highlight the importance of girls in information, communication, and technology.<\/p>\n

According to Shoki Kandjimi, a Senior Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies, the International Girls in ICT Day is important in encouraging more girls and young women to have an interest in ICT.<\/p>\n

The International Girls in ICT Day is commemorated internationally on April 27th, and the theme is \u201cDigital Skills for Life\u201d this year.<\/p>\n

Kandjimi remarked that this day serves to motivate and encourage girls to seek a career in ICTs, as well as to empower them by providing them with the necessary skills, confidence, and support to achieve their objectives and bridge the gender digital divide.<\/p>\n

According to Kandjimi, global statistics show that girls and women, particularly in developing countries, are less likely to have access to digital platforms such as the internet than men and young boys, which has widened the gender digital divide globally and is attributed to a lack of digital skills among Namibian girls.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our role as governments and stakeholders within the ICT space to direct our efforts to empower girls with the necessary digital skills to bridge the gender digital gap,\u201d said Kandjimi.<\/p>\n

The ministry also pointed out that digital literacy is critical to the success of digital transformation in Namibia and, by extension, the rest of the globe.<\/p>\n

\u201cCollectively, we must use alternative mechanisms to increase digital literacy in Namibia. Therefore, we need to initiate programs such as introducing coding and programming classes in schools, community centers, and offering digital skills training to our young girls,\u201d Kandjimi remarked.<\/p>\n
