Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE local community is the backbone of any development, and therefore it needs to be empowered. This was said by the Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa, during his address at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Tsandi-Omugulugombashe road on Monday.<\/p>\n

Mutorwa urged contractors to cease the practice of employing individuals based on family connections and friendships. Instead, he emphasized the importance of providing employment opportunities to capable members of the local community, in line with the requirements of the tender policy.<\/p>\n

According to the policy, once a contractor is awarded a tender, they should prioritize utilizing manpower from within the designated work jurisdiction, rather than bringing in workers from other areas.<\/p>\n

Approximately 40 community members from Tsandi and Omugulugombashe and their surrounding areas are expected to be employed on the project. Mutorwa explained that the aim is to generate significant revenue within the community, thereby contributing, albeit in a small way, to poverty alleviation and reducing unemployment.<\/p>\n

Mutorwa stressed his desire to avoid problems that may arise from hiring workers from outside the area. He urged contractors to employ individuals regardless of their tribe or race.<\/p>\n

David David of Kambwa Construction (Pty) Ltd assured the minister that they would complete the road ahead of schedule, ensuring the provision of the necessary road network for the people. Kambwa also said that all borrow pits used in the construction would be rehabilitated and converted into an earth dam to store water for the residents.<\/p>\n
