Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>The longest single-stage mountain bike event in the world, the Nedbank Desert Dash, returns for its nineteenth consecutive year.<\/p>\n

Entries for this year\u2019s Nedbank Desert Dash solo category opened yesterday, with the two-person team categories and the four-person team categories, scheduled to open on 12 and 19 June, respectively.<\/p>\n

This year, the Nedbank Desert Dash will take place on 8 and 9 December 2023. The 397-kilometre cycling race will start at the Grove Mall in Windhoek, run through the Khomas \u2013 Hochland Mountains and the Namib Desert, and end at the coastal town of Swakopmund.<\/p>\n

To date, Nedbank Namibia has invested around N$10 million since taking over as title sponsor eight years ago. Last year, the race had over 1 100 cyclists registered across the three categories and saw Namibian cyclist Drikus Coetzee win the Solo Men\u2019s category in a time of 15:17:09.<\/p>\n

Preparations for this year\u2019s event are underway with some exciting developments, which include a first-ever e-bike category. This new category will apply only to four-person teams, where each cyclist will be required to ride on an e-bike.<\/p>\n

In this year\u2019s event, only 15 e-bike slots will be available, and cyclists will have to familiarise themselves with the e-bike rules upon entering the race. Nedbank Namibia communication and public relations manager Selma Kaulinge said the bank is privileged to witness the remarkable journey of the Nedbank Desert Dash.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is notable to see how far this race has come. We are in the 19th edition of the race and just like the steady pedalling of a cyclist, this event has continued to push boundaries and forge ahead with unwavering determination. Nedbank Namibia is proud to be part of an event, which brings together passionate cyclists from all walks of life, uniting them in a common pursuit of excellence and camaraderie. We are excited for this year\u2019s edition and hope to see all cyclists cross the finish line.\u201d Kaulinge said.<\/p>\n
