Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE need to intensify interventions and strategies that address non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, diabetes, and cancers, was one of the key topics discussed at the 76th World Health Assembly (WHA76).<\/p>\n

This was revealed by the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, during the press briefing on Namibia\u2019s successful participation at WHA76. The World Health Assembly, which takes place every year, was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 21 to 30 May.<\/p>\n

The minister revealed that the assembly highlighted the promotion of physical activity, the implementation of measures to control obesity, reducing the consumption of salt, sugar, and trans-fats, as well as programs to stop smoking and the use of tobacco products as possible interventions to address NCDs.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Shangula said that the assembly also discussed the need to reorient health systems towards primary health care for the attainment of universal coverage by 2030 and acknowledged the need to address mental health issues.<\/p>\n

Shangula said that the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, also called on WHO member states to prioritize the attainment of the highest possible standard of health for all, particularly for marginalized and disabled people.<\/p>\n

The minister further revealed that Ghebreyesus also emphasized the importance of engaging persons with disabilities and prioritizing their social inclusion, and called on delegations to return to the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1978, a landmark commitment aimed at achieving health for all through primary health care by the year 2000.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegrettably, this vision was not achieved by the end of the 20th Century, but it still remains the bedrock for achieving Universal Health Coverage by 2030. As such there is a need to reinvigorate focus on the Primary health care approach. He further emphasized that the time is now to write a new chapter in the history book of Global Health, focusing on improved well-being and health outcomes for the world\u2019s population,\u201d Shangula said.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the health minister emphasized the importance for the African region to unite and strengthen prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery from public health emergencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remarked that the discussions under the Working Group on Amendments to the International Health Regulations 2005 (WGIHR), as well as the discussions under the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) for the new Pandemic Accord, provide a unique opportunity for Africa to change the current international health regime and ensure that Africa receives equitable and timely access to health products and health technologies to build core capacities within the region to prepare for, and respond to health emergencies adequately,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
