Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>United States forward Trinity Rodman expects the defending Women\u2019s World Cup champions to be \u201cruthless\u201d at this year\u2019s tournament and is confident they can win a third straight title despite the absence of several key players due to injuries.<\/p>\n

Captain Becky Sauerbrunn, this year\u2019s leading scorer Mallory Swanson and midfielders Catarina Macario and Sam Mewis have all been ruled out of the global soccer showpiece, which kicks off on 20 July in Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n

Of the 23 players in the squad, Rodman is one of 14 heading to their first World Cup but the 21-year-old said expectations for the new-look team remain the same.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy expectations are that we\u2019re the most ruthless team, we\u2019re never going to give up and we\u2019re going to get the title,\u201d Rodman, who scored both goals in Sunday\u2019s friendly win over Wales, told ESPN.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously the team has changed so much over the last couple of World Cups, even the past couple of months, but this team is something special. We want it more than ever, so I expect a gold medal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The top-ranked Americans begin their World Cup campaign on 22 July against tournament debutants Vietnam at Eden Park in Auckland. They will also face 2019 runners-up Netherlands and newcomers Portugal in Group E.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think with this team everyone expects success obviously based off the past,\u201d Rodman added. \u201cBut there are a lot of new players and a lot of connections that need to be built for the first game, so it\u2019s just the pressure of doing well.<\/p>\n

\u201c(People think) you guys should be blowing these teams out or should be winning, and it\u2019s a lot harder than that.\u201d<\/p>\n
