Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>Speeding has become an alarming issue on our roads, leading to countless accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. The Windhoek City Police issues about 30-40 speed fines per day. Despite ongoing efforts to promote road safety, many drivers continue to disregard speed limits, risking their lives and the lives of other road users who may end up as innocent victims. The maximum speed limit within the city is 60km per hour and 80km per hour on the Western Bypass. There are many traffic signs along the road indicating the speed limits for motorists to police themselves and to do what is expected of them as responsible drivers. When drivers exceed the speed limit, they have less time to react to unexpected situations, making it harder to avoid collisions. This leads to more severe crashes, often resulting in irreversible consequences.<\/p>\n

The Windhoek City Police plays a vital role in addressing the issue of speeding through increased enforcement through the use of speed cameras, speed trailers, booze buses and patrol officers. Accident prone areas are identified in collaboration with Traffic Engineers, resulting in installation of speed calming measures such as speed humps to prevent speeding.<\/p>\n

However, enforcement alone is not enough. City Police also make use of various media platforms to educate and create awareness of the risks associated with speeding and encourage responsible driving habits.<\/p>\n

Speeding is not only a dangerous habit, but it also carries legal consequences and drivers caught exceeding the speed limit may face fines or even imprisonment. Speed fines vary depending on the actual speed a particular individual is doing in a specific zone.<\/p>\n

The highest speeding fine is N$4 000 and drivers can be arrested for reckless and negligent driving. On conviction, a driver may lose their driving licence. It is important to understand that these penalties are in place to protect lives and promote responsible driving.<\/p>\n

Speeding continues to claim lives and cause devastating consequences on our roads. It is important for motorists to understand the risks they pose and prioritise responsible driving and adhere to speed limits.<\/p>\n
