Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>The Government of the Republic of Namibia has been closely monitoring the political situation in the Republic of Niger with deep concern, and it unequivocally condemns the coup d\u2019e\u0301tat that resulted in the removal of the democratically elected government and the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum on 26 July 2023.<\/p>\n

Namibia reiterates its unwavering stance on zero tolerance for any attempt to seize power through unconstitutional means.<\/p>\n

In alignment with the African Union\u2019s (AU) statement on the attempted coup, Namibia urges the people of Niger, their African brothers, particularly in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the international community to unite in unequivocal condemnation of the coup attempt and demand the immediate and unconditional return of the soldiers to their barracks.<\/p>\n

This position is in accordance with the principles of the AU, the AU Constitutive Act, and the African Charter on Democratic Elections and Governance, which call for the rejection and denunciation of any unconstitutional change of government. Namibia stands in solidarity with the AU\u2019s commitment to achieving peace by silencing the guns in Africa.<\/p>\n

Executive Director Penda Naanda emphasized that Namibia demands the immediate release of President Bazoum and all other political detainees. The nation urges for the restoration of constitutional order and a swift return to civilian rule. Additionally, Namibia calls upon the international community to extend all possible support to the people of Niger as they seek a democratic solution to the current situation and strive for sustained peace and stability in the country.<\/p>\n
