Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>LEARNERS from Superb Children English Academy in Oshikuku commemorated their belated African Child Day.<\/p>\n This year, the theme is \u201cThe Rights of the Child in the digital environment.\u201d<\/p>\n Speaking during the commemoration, Deputy Minister of Information, Communication, and Technology, Emma Theofelus, said that the Day of the African Child serves to commemorate these children and the brave action they took in defense of their rights.<\/p>\n Theofelus said it further celebrates the children of Africa and calls for serious introspection and commitment towards addressing the numerous challenges facing children across the continent.<\/p>\n She explained that internet access and usage have been increasing globally, and Namibia is no exception.<\/p>\n While the internet offers incredible opportunities, Theofelus indicated that it also exposes children to potential dangers such as cyberbullying, online grooming, and exposure to inappropriate content.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is our duty to create a protective shield around our children, ensuring their safety online,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n She noted that in order to achieve this, they need to promote digital literacy and education for children, parents, and educators alike.<\/p>\n Hence, Theofelus said that schools should integrate digital literacy into their curriculum, teaching children about online safety, privacy, and critical thinking.<\/p>\n Additionally, she said industry stakeholders and policymakers must play an active role in safeguarding the rights of the child in the digital environment.<\/p>\n \u201cICT companies, institutions of higher learning, and others should prioritize the development of age-appropriate platforms and tools that protect children\u2019s privacy and well-being,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n She added that beyond that, their children have rights and have inherent human rights as human beings born into this world.<\/p>\n She stressed that they have responsibilities too, of course, yet their human rights get violated every day when people don\u2019t create a safe and conducive environment for their children.<\/p>\n Theofelus then called on the public to do better in caring for their young ones.<\/p>\n\r\n
