Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>Since its inception, the Lidar Community Foundation has been at the helm of youth empowerment \u2013 and has over the years been a haven for orphans and vulnerable children as well as young mothers around Katutura, Windhoek. Founded by Serlyn Khaxas, the community-based organisation aims to make a positive change in the lives of young girls and teenage mothers.<\/p>\n

Destined to change the fate of many unemployed and less-privileged young mothers in the country, the foundation, through its Young Mothers Employment and Empowerment initiative, seeks financial assistance to the value of N$50 000 and other in-kind donations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe majority of current beneficiaries of the initiative have been negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are humbly requesting the public and good Samaritans to help us with the little they can to continue empowering young mothers,\u2019\u2019 said Khaxas.<\/p>\n

The 50 beneficiaries of the initiative are fully trained in baking and cooking \u2013 and the donations will enable them to utilise these skills to embark on vendor food businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese funds will aid in securing daily necessities and essentials for babies and toddlers every month end. All the funds raised through the food sales will be managed by the Lidar Community Foundation. The ladies will sell their items during break time to learners and staff members of each school involved in the<\/p>\n

the programme,\u201d she added. Khaxas further said some of the trained young women placed at different lodges around the country were retrenched due to Covid-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe realised that employment opportunities in the country are scares, and it is becoming harder to find jobs for these women; hence, we embarked on this initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Khaxas has also provided a home for school girls, while other children who have shelter but lack support go to the foundation to spend the day there, get fed, and are taught house chores.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe encourage and mentor adolescent girls and young women to believe in their dreams, aspirations and abilities. We want to persevere their drive and determination to become the driving force of their transformation,\u201d she said, further adding that her dream is to create an environment where girls can have a proper support system and be groomed for a better future. The initiative focuses on employment creation, practical entrepreneurship training, financial literacy and sustainability.<\/p>\n
