Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, has called on the newly appointed Electricity Control Board (ECB) Board Members to prioritise good governance and high ethical standards above the pursuit of profit-making.<\/p>\n

\u201cEspecially in such a sensitive industry, such as the electricity industry, without trust and confidence, we could incite distrust in our systems and structures. And I am sure that a decline in confidence or trust is something none of us want,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n

Alweendo said this during the recent appointment of the new ECB Board Members, who were appointed in accordance with section 5 of the Electricity Act 4 of 2007. The appointed Board Members include Evangeline Nailenge as Chairperson, Professor Tjama Tjivikua as Deputy Chairperson, along with Mburumba Appolus, Vincia Cloete, and Helen Vosloo. They are set to serve as ECB Board Members from September 8, 2023, to August 7, 2027.<\/p>\n

The primary responsibility of this board is to oversee the regulation and control of the Namibian Electricity Supply Industry, with a focus on ensuring the interests of all stakeholders are safeguarded in terms of pricing, quality, and reliability.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to implore you to accomplish the mandate of the ECB together with its Executive Management, by exercising control over the electricity supply industry with the main responsibility of regulating electricity generation, transmission, distribution, supply, import and export in Namibia through setting tariffs and issuance of licenses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In carrying out this vital task, Alweendo encouraged the prioritisation of good corporate governance and ethical conduct. He explained that this approach would not only enhance corporate, social, and investor confidence but also serve as a fundamental pillar in the country\u2019s and industry\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlways enforce, good corporate governance. When I say this, I am not directing you to pursue ethical behaviour for its own sake, but because it is a vital plank in nation and industry building,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
