Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>Ongwediva Town Council spokesperson Jackson Muma has urged residents to avoid cutting down trees in the Omatando area.<\/p>\n

According to him, the town council\u2019s office has received numerous calls from Omatando residents, complaining about people from other settlements cutting down trees for firewood in their location.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome members of the community go there and cut down the big, protected trees, which is very disappointing because these trees will be needed now and in the future. The big thorn trees are not supposed to be cut, and we have spoken to the people that they can only cut the shrubs,\u201d said Muma.<\/p>\n

He highlighted that trees provide shade to the animals and humans.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have involved members of the ministry of environment to see how best the official can assist us and remedy the situation,\u2019\u2019 said Muma.<\/p>\n

He maintained that the town is known for unspoilt natural vegetation and wants public understanding in buying into their aspirations of a green town.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are also aware that criminals use these shrubs to commit crimes, but we will still hold hands with the public and clear the bushes only and not cut down the trees. We understand that criminals use bushy areas to commit crimes, and that is why we have this programme of de-bushing areas,\u201d said Muma.<\/p>\n
