Mining executives who attended an EU-Namibia conference on critical minerals emphasized that substantial investment is a prerequisite before Namibia can effectively produce battery-ready metals.<\/p>\n<p>One of the chief challenges stems from Namibia\u2019s sparse population and arid climate, making the acquisition of the necessary water and energy resources for battery metal processing a complex endeavour. Additionally, upgrading the transportation infrastructure is essential to facilitate the efficient export of battery metals to global markets.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these challenges, Namibia possesses several distinctive advantages that position it favourably to become a manufacturing hub for battery metals. In 2022, the government took the bold step of banning the export of unprocessed lithium and rare earth minerals, encouraging companies to process these valuable minerals domestically. Simultaneously, the government is in the process of devising plans for the construction of an industrial park in Walvis Bay, a major port city.
