Recently, 66 houses constructed by the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia were handed over by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni.<\/p>\n<p>During the same ceremony, Uutoni also handed over electrical cables.<\/p>\n<p>According to Uutoni, housing is a key national development priority and an important vehicle for addressing poverty, inequality, social harmony, economic advancement, and ensuring political stability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shack dweller has indeed focused their minds and energies on addressing the causes of inequality at a time when our nation is faced with an acute housing shortage and other socio disparities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the government acknowledges the challenges in the housing industry and is committed to providing decent housing as stipulated in our Vision 2030, National Development Plans, and the Harambee Prosperity Plan II.<\/p>\n<p>Uutoni indicated that there is no challenge too difficult to overcome if they work together.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it is imperative that the government, the private sector, and the community collaborate to fulfill the Harambee Prosperity Plan and develop the Namibian House.<\/p>\n<p>To date, the government has provided financial support amounting to N$111.8 million, which was used to construct 3,555 housing units.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Uutoni said that the government, through the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, believes in and will continue to support the work of community-based organizations such as the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia, which has demonstrated its commitment and ability to contribute to the national drive towards providing affordable housing and proper sanitation to our people, especially those in the ultra-low and low-income categories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Shack Dwellers Federation\u2019s solution to housing is unique and worth supporting, as it is a case of the community itself taking action to address its own developmental needs,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He said that this is a clear testimony of sustainable and people-centred development, and he pledged their continued support.<\/p>\n<p>Uutoni then urged
