{"id":66787,"date":"2024-04-16T16:52:33","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T16:52:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/anti-human-trafficking-high-on-police-agenda"},"modified":"2024-04-16T17:07:52","modified_gmt":"2024-04-16T17:07:52","slug":"anti-human-trafficking-high-on-police-agenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/anti-human-trafficking-high-on-police-agenda","title":{"rendered":"Anti-human trafficking high on police agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>Safety minister Albert Kawana has called on the officers manning the checkpoints around the country to ensure that only children carrying valid national documents and accompanied by their parents or guardians are allowed to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be penalties if such transporters or drivers are transporting children without proper documents&#8230; Namibia has an obligation to prevent human trafficking, therefore, we should ensure compliance,\u201d Kawana said last Thursday when commissioning the operationalisation of the Onhuno road traffic checkpoint in Ohangwena region.<\/p>\n<p>The upgraded Onhuno checkpoint is equipped with accommodation for officials and an office block with ablution facilities for officers and members of the public. The facility cost N$8.3 million to construct.<\/p>\n<p>Kawana said the newly-commissioned checkpoint serves as a critical point for monitoring and regulating traffic flow, ensuring compliance with road safety regulations and deterring criminal activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the upgrading of this facility, we are not only modernising our infrastructure, but also strengthening our capacity to effectively address the challenges posed by road traffic management and security,\u201d the minister stated.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cIt is incumbent upon all of us to prioritise road safety, and work collaboratively towards achieving our shared goal of reducing accidents.\u201d He added that the checkpoint furthermore underscores the government\u2019s broader commitment to promoting sustainable development and economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy investing in projects like the Onhuno road traffic checkpoint, we are not only improving road safety, but also laying the foundation for a more prosperous future for generations to come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kawana then urged Namibians to embrace a culture of responsibility, respect and cooperation on the road to ensure that \u201cevery journey is safe\u201d. Kawana also thanked Namibian Police\u2019s head Joseph Shikongo for rewarding members of the force for their hard work and dedication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time officers are smiling because they obtained a better rank. Well done inspector general,\u201d he applauded.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the same occasion, Shikongo urged the community to play their part in crime prevention. One such way is ensuring that they always have the contact numbers of the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways report crimes on time. Stop hiding thieves.
