Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>Ella du Plessis High School\u2019s Earth Month celebration recently was a vibrant and impactful event that highlighted the urgent need to address plastic pollution. The theme for the event was \u2018Earth vs Plastics\u2019, emphasising the importance of reducing plastic waste and protecting the planet. The celebration began with a welcoming, followed by a keynote address that underscored the significance of Earth Month, and the role that individuals can play in protecting the environment. A highlight of the event was a performance by learner Titus, also known as \u201cCota\u201d, who captivated the audience with his talent and passion for environmental conservation.<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s drama club also took the stage, delivering a powerful performance that highlighted the harmful effects of plastic pollution on the environment and wildlife. The performance served as a poignant reminder of the impact of people’s daily choices on the planet. One of the key moments of the celebration was the awards ceremony for Earth Month competition winners. Students who had shown exceptional dedication to environmental conservation were recognised for their efforts, inspiring others to take action in their own lives. Following the awards ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to participate in the tree-planting ceremony in the school garden. This symbolic gesture represented the school\u2019s commitment to sustainability, and its efforts to create a greener, cleaner future.<\/p>\n

The event\u2019s directors of ceremonies, Adasta Kumbu and Cecilia Mukalele, made a bold statement by wearing dresses made out of plastic, highlighting the versatility of plastic materials, and the need to find more sustainable alternatives.<\/p>\n

The success of the Earth Month celebration was made possible by the generous support of sponsors. Maerua Superspar donated more than N$1000 for gift prizes for competition winners, Rent-A-Drum provided materials for decorating the assembly and the host dresses, and the Namibia Chamber of Environment contributed N$1 800 for the tree planting, demonstrating the community\u2019s commitment to environmental conservation. Overall, Ella du Plessis High School\u2019s Earth Month celebration was a resounding success, bringing together students, teachers and community members to raise awareness about plastic pollution and inspire action to protect our planet.<\/p>\n
