Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>The City of Windhoek and MTC have cemented a strategic partnership aimed at deploying cutting-edge technology to assist the Windhoek City Police in preventing crime.<\/p>\n

The agreement was signed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

MTC pledged its support for the city police by procuring Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and supporting equipment as well as assisting with the installation thereof.<\/p>\n

MTC managing director, Licky Erastus emphasised the role of technology in addressing societal challenges and advancing national development agendas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenges that face society today require smart partnerships, the embrace of relevant technologies, and innovative approaches to solving them. Crime affects all of us, and it requires a joint approach to meaningfully curb it. We need to tackle it from all fronts with collective combat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Erastus explained that the partnership will not only focus on enhancing law enforcement capabilities but also aims to improve connectivity for Windhoek residents.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough the streamlined approval for new connectivity site acquisitions to expand the network coverage within the boundaries of the capital city. It will also serve as a framework to support the smart city concepts including enhanced service delivery, processes, and system efficiency, better access to and management of information are central,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The City of Windhoek\u2019s chief executive officer, Moses Matyayi said the partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration between the public and private sectors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese CCTV cameras will be strategically positioned across key areas of Windhoek, and they will play a pivotal role in deterring criminal activities and fostering a safer environment for all residents,\u201d said Matyayi.<\/p>\n

The mayor of Windhoek, Queen Kamati, lauded MTC for being at the forefront of Namibia\u2019s digital transformation and commended them for their innovation.<\/p>\n

The chief of the City Police, Leevi Ileka said the agreement aligns with the city\u2019s vision of becoming a smart city by 2027, where more than 2,000 CCTV cameras will cover various areas of the capital city.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis win-win partnership signifies more than just a material offering, which will double the already existing number of cameras. It symbolises a shared commitment to safeguarding our neighbourhoods and fostering trust within the community while empowering our officers through more extensive coverage of the area to be patrolled,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
