Africa-Press<\/a> – Namibia<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Today, in newspapers all over Germany, Namibian artist Rudolf Seibeb’s art\u2028considering World Press Freedom (3 May) takes pride of place.<\/p>\n

Recently invited to commemorate the occasion by the German Newspaper Publishers\u2028and Digital Publishers Association (BDZV), Seibeb’s painting is titled ‘Freedom Day’\u2028and compares journalistic freedom with the victorious aftermath of Namibia’s\u2028struggle for independence.\u2028Currently being showcased across a selection of BDZV’s media which includes 286\u2028newspapers and over 600 outlets online, the self-taught, 57-year old artist’s World\u2028Press Freedom Day painting is an exhibit of the artist’s celebrated style.\u2028Known for his vivid, somewhat abstract scenes and arresting compositions centred\u2028around human faces and forms who gather, overlap and exist within and beside each\u2028other, Seibeb creates a vibrant, mostly free community in which the journalist\u2028occupies the lower left corner, their mouth shuttered with iron bars.\u2028While Namibia is celebrated as Africa’s best ranked country in the Reporters Without\u2028Borders World Press Freedom Index, Seibeb, who was mentored on the topic by The\u2028Project Room’s Frieda L\u00fchl alongside a local reporter, understands that various\u2028factors may curtail journalistic freedom.\u2028These factors could include the media’s dependence on advertising, governmental\u2028pressure as well as threats of exclusion or violence when reporting on hot topics\u2028such as politics, failing leadership, fraudulent or exploitative business practices and\u2028corruption.\u2028The artist represents these barriers through the journalist’s \u201cjailed mouth\u201d or \u201ctronk\u2028mond,\u201d though it is rare that journalists in Namibia will literally be jailed for any\u2028offending articles.\u2028To represent the media, Seibeb depicts a newspaper because, after radio, it is one of\u2028the primary ways through which Namibians receive the daily news.
