Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>The Popular Democratic Movement Youth League’s elective congress in Windhoek has failed to progress after chaos ensued over disagreements about the list of delegates attending the event.<\/b><\/p>\n

Sources at the failed congress, which started on Saturday morning, told The Namibian some delegates who travelled from different regions were not legitimate members of the party’s youth league.<\/p>\n

Some delegates were added to the list of delegates without having gone through the nomination process which took place during the restructuring of the party’s regional structures.<\/p>\n

The congress was expected to elect a new leadership for the party’s youth wing and nominate delegates to represent the youth league at the PDM’s national congress in 2024.<\/p>\n

About 120 delegates from all 14 regions of Namibia were to attend the congress. The PDM Youth League has been split in two factions going into Saturday’s congress.<\/p>\n

One faction, led by outgoing youth league secretary Bensen Katjiriova, is backing incumbent party leader McHenry Venaani to retain his position for a third term beyond 2024.<\/p>\n

The other faction, purportedly led by PDM member of parliament Inna Hengari, wants the youthful Vipua Muharukua, also a PDM member of parliament, to take over the party’s reins in 2024. Earlier on Saturday, party leader Venaani urged congress attendants to avoid fighting among each other and to unite for a common cause.<\/p>\n

Outgoing secretary Katjiriova was not reachable for comment. Youth league spokesperson Maximilliant Katjimune said he would issue a statement clarifying the events that took place at the failed congress.<\/p>\n
