Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE Oshikoto Regional Council has resolved to utilize an amount of N$4.1 million to implement rural sanitation and rural development programmes in the region during the 2024\/25 financial year.<\/p>\n

The funds were allocated to the Council by the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development.<\/p>\n

Council spokesperson Petrus Nehale said that out of the total allocated funds, an amount of N$3.3 million will be utilized for the implementation of Rural Sanitation Programmes. Nehale indicated that they are expected to construct 180 toilets in their 10 constituencies: Guinas, Nehale Lya Mpingana, Omuthiya, Eengodi, Okankolo, Omuntele, Onyaanya, Onayena, Oniipa, and Olukonda.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is part of the Regional Council\u2019s ongoing commitment to improve rural sanitation in the region and to promote the well-being of residents, as well as to support efforts to end open defecation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Nehale said an amount of N$846,153.85 is allocated to the Rural Development Programme and will be used for the provision of water under the programme of Food\/Cash for Work. This is to complement the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform in addressing the challenges of the shortage of potable water in the region.<\/p>\n

According to Nehale, in the last financial year, the Council constructed three short-water pipelines in the Omuntele, Okankolo, and Onyaanya constituencies to the tune of N$634,615. However, due to low water pressure and lack of feeder pipelines in some parts of the region, the Regional Council resolved to allocate funds for Rural Development during this financial year for the installation of existing drilled boreholes in Guinas and Nehale Lya Mpingana constituencies.<\/p>\n

He said that each constituency is allocated an amount of N$423,226.93, and the project will be implemented during this financial year.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther resolutions taken during the Council meeting include the approval of the Regional Council\u2019s Internal Audit Policy, which sets a tone for good governance, ensures accountability, and strengthens internal control measures,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Nehale indicated that the Council also resolved to enter into a Twinning Agreement with the Province of Uige in Angola, which aims at establishing a cooperation framework between the two regional governments in the areas of decentralization, regional government, municipal or local authorities\u2019 administration, traditional authorities, training, and capacity building, among others.<\/p>\n
