Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>The Namibia Revenue Agency (Namra) has launched a whistle-blower\u2019s hotline for concerned citizens to report tax evasion, fraud and money laundering.<\/b><\/p>\n

In a statement yesterday, Namra commissioner Sam Shivute said the hotline, launched in partnership with Deloitte Namibia, is available to Namra employees, stakeholders and members of the public.<\/p>\n

It offers a channel to report issues such as smuggling, drug trafficking and any other misconduct or non-compliance of Namra\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n

Non-compliance includes a range of activities aimed at disregarding Namibia\u2019s tax laws. This includes tax avoidance, which is tax reduction by legal means, and tax evasion, which is the illegal non-payment of tax.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis initiative, which follows the board\u2019s approval of Namra\u2019s whistle-blowing policy, demonstrates our ongoing commitment to transparency and integrity,\u201d said Shivute.<\/b><\/p>\n

He noted that in order to ensure neutrality and confidentiality, the hotline will be managed by an independent consultant \u2013 Deloitte Namibia.<\/p>\n

\u201cReports submitted through the hotline will help Namra uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct and allow the prompt and effective addressing of any violations,\u201d said Shivute.<\/p>\n

He, however, warned that the fraud hotline is intended solely for issues within Namra\u2019s jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

\u201cComplaints outside Namra\u2019s control may be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agencies,\u201d he said, adding that individuals can report through the toll-free number 0800 535 777 or email: namra@tip-offs.com or at www.tip-offs.com<\/p>\n

According to Namra, the late submission of tax returns attracts a penalty of N$100 a day for both companies and individuals, while under-estimated tax attracts a penalty of up to 100% and late payment incurs a penalty of 10% per month.<\/p>\n
