Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>A GROUP of youth from Olupito village in the Okalongo constituency has proven that through unity, they can achieve great things for the benefit of their community.<\/p>\n

What started as a project to address health hazards during their meetings has now grown into a community initiative aimed at combating open defecation.<\/p>\n

Open defecation causes major health and environmental problems in informal settlements where residents lack access to proper sanitation facilities and are forced to defecate in dry riverbeds or bushy areas near their homes.<\/p>\n

To date, the community has come together to construct two toilets\u2014one for men and one for women\u2014at their meeting point.<\/p>\n

Shifa Madilaadilo expressed sadness at seeing their elders, especially women, having to find open spaces to relieve themselves when nature calls.<\/p>\n

According to Madilaadilo, in many cases, some women either go behind trees, which is unsafe, to relieve themselves\u2014something that is unhealthy for anyone to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn many cases, we go behind trees to relieve ourselves, and those unable to do so either go to the nearby cucashop, which is quite a distance from our meeting area,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that this initiative not only brought the youth together but also demonstrated how united they are as a community.<\/p>\n
