{"id":78687,"date":"2024-10-14T16:38:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-14T16:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/govt-seeks-to-plug-power-generation-gap"},"modified":"2024-10-14T16:38:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T16:38:00","slug":"govt-seeks-to-plug-power-generation-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/namibia\/all-news\/govt-seeks-to-plug-power-generation-gap","title":{"rendered":"Govt seeks to plug power generation gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Namibia. <\/strong><\/span><b>The Namibian government is determined to bridge the gap between domestic power generation and total consumption of renewable energy.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This was said by mines and energy minister Tom Alweendo on Thursday, at the signing of a renewable energy sector agreement with United States (US) ambassador to Namibia Randy Berry.<\/p>\n<p>He said Namibia is actively pursuing regulatory reforms to promote transparency and attract international investors, and is committed to making the country an attractive investment destination for renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>According to a joint statement released after the signing ceremony, the agreement is aimed at reducing or eliminating barriers to investment and attaining Namibia\u2019s Vision 2030 strategy by expanding the country\u2019s renewable energy generation.<\/p>\n<p>Alweendo said the agreement serves as a vital framework for collaboration and is an essential part of the country\u2019s broader national ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough this partnership with the US, we will explore innovative technologies and enhance our capacity in key areas such as solar and wind energy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Mines and Energy and the US Agency for International Development\u2019s Power Africa Initiative will be responsible for the implementation of this agreement, notes the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Alweendo acknowledged the importance of regional collaboration in achieving shared renewable energy goals, such as working with neighbouring countries, which will enhance Namibia\u2019s collective energy stability and foster economic growth throughout the southern African region.<\/p>\n<p>Berry said the agreement underscores a shared commitment to Namibia\u2019s sustainable economic growth and industrialisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also reflects the strong partnership between our two nations, built on mutual respect and a common vision for a prosperous future,\u201d Berry added.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy assistant secretary Kimberly Harrington said: \u201cThis process took time, which reflects the vast number of players from the US government who are eager to partner with Namibia.
