Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>Preparations are underway for the Ovambanderu Centenary Commemoration scheduled for 31 October to 2 November 2024 at Epukiro Sports Ground in Omaueuozonjanda.<\/p>\n

The chosen dates will mark the significant history of the Ovambanderu people, commemorating 100 years since their migration from concentration camps to Epukiro in the Omaheke region.<\/p>\n

In 1924, the late Nikanor Hoveka led the movement of the Ovambanderu people from the concentration camps to Epukiro.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Nampa in an interview, Uahavi Kauami, chairperson of the organising committee, said work is progressing well, with the committee working tirelessly to ensure the event, which is being held under the theme \u2018Remembering our Journey, Celebrating our Legacy,\u2019 is a success.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur leadership has spoken, and we have been given the blessing to organise this historic occasion in our community. This is another milestone for the Ovambanderu people, as their history will be told correctly,\u201d said Kauami. The chairperson added that following the death of Chief Kahimemua Nguvauva in 1896, the Ovambanderu tribe was placed under the leadership of Samuel Maharero in an attempt to erase the Ovambanderu as an independent tribe.<\/p>\n

He noted that the community\u2019s migration from concentration camps would serve to enlighten the youth and future generations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a national event, and it belongs to all inhabitants, regardless of tribe. The fact remains that Epukiro is known as an Ovambanderu area, but other tribes living here are welcome to attend,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Various cultural activities, performances and historical exhibitions of equipment and artefacts will take place throughout the event. \u201cOf course, we will commemorate the day by narrating the events of the migration period, and displaying various tools and their uses from the past. We will also demonstrate this in a documentary form,\u201d Kauami stated.<\/p>\n
