Africa-Press – Namibia. <\/strong><\/span>THE founding editor of The Namibian newspaper Gwen Lister says the late archbishop Desmond Tutu lived his truth.<\/b><\/p>\n

Tutu along with the late Anglican Diocese of Namibian James Kauluma visited the office of The Namibian, which was under siege in 1986.<\/p>\n

The newspaper’s offices were attacked and almost burned down in 1988 by a vigilante group called Wit Wolwe in an attempt to suppress its reporting on human rights abuses by South African forces.<\/p>\n

Lister in a tweet on Sunday said the visit by the two bishops gave the staff of the newspaper hope and courage.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe revered a free press and believed in what was good and right and just,\u201d said Lister.<\/p>\n

In The Namibian’s 25th anniversary commemorative magazine, Tutu commended the paper for remaining true to the ideals of telling the truth and press freedom.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor democracy and freedom to flourish and for good governance to happen we need a free press. The Namibian has a proud record. Long may it flourish,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
